So today one of the IJST-ers informed me that there was an Indian restaurant within biking distance of our building.
Culture class was about a book we read, and then we had a quiz for JST. We watched some videos about furoshiki and various methods of tying it up for different purposes. We were even handed some and asked to tie them following the given directions. Needless to say, the terms we learned had much to do with folding and rolling.
Naturally, I had to go and check out the Indian restaurant the very same day right after class, which is what I did. Matt and Morgan came along with me. It wasn’t as far as Don Quixote in the opposite direction, but it wasn’t close enough (or cheap enough) to go to everyday.
Nevertheless, we got there and they had two types of seating, you could sit on cushions in the Japanese style tatami room or you could sit at a conventional table. We chose the cushions, which I found slightly uncomfortable as a position to be eating in, but it reminded me of when I used to have to sit cross-legged to eat at those religious-ish functions when I was about 12 years old.
Tangents aside, the waiter there spoke Hindi and we conversed in bits throughout the meal. Turns out he’s only been in Japan for 3 years, and had no prior training in Japanese. That was pretty impressive. Also he gave us some free food (the Japanese call this “service”), which was nice.
Morgan told me he used to work at an Indian restaurant, and the only phrase he knew was “मैं तुमसे प्यार करता हूँ” (he couldn’t say it very well, it means “I love you”). I thought that was hilarious.
Then it was back to the lounge and internet before bed.
